The Chatham Fish Pier bustles with activity whenever the Chatham fishing fleet returns from sea. Best times to see them off load the catch are between noon and 2 PM daily, depending on the tide. The unloading of the boats is a big local event, drawing crowds who watch it all from an upstairs observation deck.
From their fishing grounds 3 to 100 mi offshore, fishermen bring in haddock, cod, flounder, lobster, halibut, and pollack, which are packed in ice and shipped to New York and Boston or sold at the fish market here. You might also see sand sharks being unloaded. Typically they are sent, either fresh or frozen, to French and German markets.
There is also a great fish market on the grounds of the pier.
